2018 Live animal and meat requests

As a light dusting of snow falls outside, we are forced indoors to work on planning!  As a result we have been able to start our 2018 animal request spreadsheets!  Doesn’t that sound like fun!!

If you have been looking to add Babydoll Sheep, KuneKune Pigs, or Scottish Highland cattle to your life, let me know. We anticipate lambing to start in mid to late March, piglets should start early April, and calves will drop April or May.

We will also start meat share lists for lamb, pork, and potentially beef. What is available depends on animals being retained or sold for breeding.  If you prefer to raise your own meat, we can accommodate that as well.

Feel free to reach out with which list(s) you’d like be on and any questions you may have! As always thank you for your support of us and all small farmers!

Welcome!

Welcome to Balanced Earth Farm’s corner of the interweb!

We are a small (but growing) sustainable farm in the beautiful Columbia Gorge; specifically, in Hood River, Oregon.  Hood River is an amazing little town nestled right on the banks of the mighty Columbia River that divides Oregon from Washington.  We are a mecca for windsurfing, kite boarding, mountain sports, kayaking, running and biking of all kinds.  In addition, our fertile valley produces an array of fruits and plants: apples, pears, blueberries, lavender and wine grapes!

On our farm we currently raise cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens and occasionally turkeys for meat and eggs.  These animals are also integral in our pasture management and improvement, vineyard maintenance, and humor!

Our animals are used in a management intensive grazing program in which they are rotated daily onto new pasture for grazing.  This ensures healthy pasture land, more even distribution of fertilizer, decreased need for chemical parasite control and allows us to graze from approximately April to November.

We are in process of planting approximately 10 acres of wine grapes – look for our wines in the coming years!
